Food and sustainable eating

The food we consume uses a significant amount of natural resources and has large social, environmental and economic impacts. Studies have revealed that climate change and the price impacts of declining petroleum resources will challenge both the legitimacy and viability of global food production and distribution systems.

This makes sustainable food choices vital in ensuring adequate access to food over the long-term.

Sustainable food choices include: 

  • Reducing ‘food miles’ and the energy used in transport and refrigeration
  • Growing your own fruit and veggies
  • Choosing less processed and packaged foods
  • Reducing your intake of red meat and dairy, which are greenhouse intensive
  • Choose organic, fair trade and free range products
  • Buying locally grown and seasonal produce

Sustainable food directory                             

Council has produced a Sustainable Food Business Directory that lists businesses and community enterprises in Byron Shire that stock locally-grown produce, free range eggs, fair trade products, certified organic produce and are plastic bag free.  Towns covered by the directory include Byron Bay, Mullumbimby and Bangalow.

From small, local businesses to the Shire’s highly regarded Farmers’ Markets, the handy pocket sized guide is a great snapshot of which of our businesses recognise the need to balance people, prosperity and planet.
