Asbestos removal and disposal

Are you renovating?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate material that becomes a health risk when the fibres are released into the air and breathed in. It can be found in and around most houses built before 1987.

Homeowners need to know what asbestos is and what precautions you must take if you are planning to renovate or make repairs around your home.

Asbestos Testing Kits

Free Asbestos Testing Kits can be collected from the Front Counter at Council's Head Office in Mullumbimby.

The kits contain, sample bags, instructions for taking the sample and a return paid postal satchel.

The sealed satchels must be returned to the Byron Resource Recovery Centre at 115 Manse Road in Myocum.

It will take up to five working days for the results to come back from the laboratory. Positive test results leave home owners responsible for appropriate management of asbestos removal as outlined below.

Household Asbestos Removal Kits

The Byron Resource Recovery Centre sells Household Asbestos Removal Kits at a subsidised rate of $25. The kits contain all of the safety equipment and information needed to safely remove up to 10 square metres of asbestos from your home.
